Cross-breeding Angelfish
by Ray Fagan

We are currently cross breeding a silver striped angel with a golden angel. Our young are wonderfully healthy. Try using methylene blue with the eggs in a seperate aquarium or container. This should prevent fungus from killing the eggs. Frequent water changes are also good. Check your water for correct pH, nitrites and ammonia. All of these can kill some fish. After the the fry are free swimming (7 days old) feed them with artemia and spirulina. Use a siphon hose to remove any debris from the tank. Be carefull not to siphon out the fish! (We sometimes siphon out a few by mistake and have to return them to the tank before throwing out the dirty water.) Daily water changes help but a hatchery filter can lessen the frequency required. We sometimes add nitrifying bacteria. Continue to check the water daily for any changes. As far as the cross, we had a ratio of 1:1.We have had as many as 150 eggs, with only around 30 surviving to decent size (larger than dime size). Also consult local shops to see if they have any suggestion. Please do not use water purification machines at stores. They claim to sell purified water but it is often contaminated from lack of maintainance.

Not only did we have success with different breeds of angelfish, but our yong are very healthy and the prettiest fish (no of course I'm not totally objective, but the shop owners agree) in the local shops. One of the employees stated that he rarely ever saw angels with such long full fins. We sell them mostly to local merchant, but would consider selling them to individuals if they are willing to cover the shipping costs. We currently get $1.40 for dime size and $2.00 for quarter sized angels. Good Luck!
