The african lungfish (protopterus annectens) is a very interesting fish that often does not get the attention it deserves. It can be hard to obtain a 'perfect' specimen in pet stores because they are often grouped together where they begin (just like male bettas and piranhas) to fight and mutilate each other. I got my 'perfect' lungfish when it was four inches long and now, about 6 months later, it is a whooping 18 inches. This critter eats anything and everything! It will eat both dry food and live food, so forget about keeping this thing with any other fish. It will literally 'take a bite' out of them. It is capable of hibernating, that is during 'a dry season' it buries itself in mud and forms a thin cocoon-like membrane where it can survive up to THREE or more years. I sometimes joke around with the notion that if I ever get tired of it I'll just let it hibernate for a while (but I don't think I could do that, sounds kinda cruel). It is truly a fierce and combative fish that should never been underestimated. And for those aquarists who own or are interested in them you can e-mail me at lcrosa12@hoflink.com where we can swap info and experiences.
