Moving with Fish and Tanks
by Shane Linder
Here are some suggestions when moving long distances.
- Sell everything that you do not HAVE to have. The less fish
and plants that you have to move the better. Plants (believe it or not) do
not seem to ship as easily as fish. I lost lots of plants in my move, but
only four fish (the fish loses were all due to stupidity on my part!).
- Start gathering supplies early. You will need lots of styrofoam
boxes/ coolers, rubberbands, stresscoat, big fish bags, and moving
blankets for the tanks.
- After selling the majority of fish try breaking everything down
to a couple of bare tanks. The fish will be crowded for a couple days, but
they will live. Pack up the disassembled tanks/ equipment ahead of time.
The bare tanks will make catching the fish much easier!
- On the day of the move get up early and start boxing fish. You
will need help. Pack the tanks last since you need to unload and set them
up first!
- 600 miles should be no problem. I have done 1200 with fish that
were not bothered at all. Just do not dally! Have lots of help to get the
tanks set up fast when you get there.
Hints:
- Try to check out the new place ahead of time to decide where you
want the tanks. They are rough to break down and move twice in the same
week or so.
- Do not pack aggressive fish in the same bag (one of my losses).
- Watch out for you loricariids- they will pop the bags!
- Check out the water at your new place before moving (pH, DH,
Ammonia, Chlorine, etc.) This was the reason for another loss.
