Area found and caught: South Western Brazil. 3 specimens obtained at 8-9 inches standard length. Body form resembles that of the red belly except, 1. Head is much more blunt. 2. No red coloration in eyes whatsoever. 3. top half of body is steely blue to dark off grey and bottom half is all yellow. Whole body appears pale in colour and based on reports from its captors, these fish will become all yellow when mature at a yet to be verified length of over 3 feet making it the largest piranhas known sofar if true. As well, one the specimen had a faded yet visible blotched spot behind its gill. Very little written at all about the species other than it is categorize with S.piraya, S.niger, S.nattereri as dangerous piranhas. Most significant feature is the extreme bulldog like appearance as a result of its blunt head features.
Observed behaviour, schools with other piranhas as well as its own kind.
However, quite intolerable of its own kind, it will battle with its own
kind much more rigorously for territory than if it faced say a red belly.
I would say sofar, it appears to be a little more aggressive than the red
belly and thus will play a dominent role if mix with red bellys. It
appears to handle threats and attacks from others species of piranhas very
well. In fact, in its native habitat, the fisherman fear this fish much
more than the S. Niger. The common name given to the fish is Yellow King
or Emperor Piranha by the habitants where the piranha is found. More info
to come in the future. Availabilty in the trade past or present, very
rare, though someone mentioned they had seen one awhile ago.
