No Table Manners

The Archerfish has a unique way of "spitting" to catch above-water prey

by Michael McEwan

Archer fish are interesting fishes to say the least. They will actually spit water at insects that are close to the water, making the prey fall into the water where it is eaten. The tongue and roof of the fish's mouth form the equivalent of a gun barrel. They can spit about five feet. The Archer fish has a silver body with dark blotchy spots. The dorsal fin is far set back on the body and is silver with black blotches, as is the anal fin.

Tank Setup

In the home aquarium it may be difficult to replicate the fish's natural environment. Water depth is not usually considered much of an issue with this surface-dweller, however the tank should be long and wide to create a larger surface area. These are shoaling fish and should be kept with their own kind and all should be the same size. Larger specimens may become aggressive towards others.

Feeding

Feed these fish live foods whenever possible. They are carnivorous, and thus should be fed a diet based mostly on meaty foods and insects. Use floating foods only.

Water Chemistry

These fish must be kept in brackish waters.

Breeding

These fish breed in saltwater. The young then venture to freshwater, and eventually brackish waters.
