Malayan Angel

Monodactylus argenteus is a timid fish well-known to any brackish fish keeper

by Mike McEwan

Monodactylus argenteus is a brackish water fish originating from the eastern coast of Africa to Indonesia and Asia. Commonly known as the Mono, Fingerfish, Malayan Angel and Silver Batfish, it is a triangular shaped fish that is silver in color. Two vertical black stripes run across the eye and the gill plate. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins are yellow. Juveniles tend to fade in color as they mature.

Tank Setup

Monos are very quick fish that need plenty of open swimming space. For a fully grown adult an aquarium of no less than 45 gallons will do. They prefer to swim in schools of five or more. These are shy fish that should have plenty of hiding places in the aquarium such as rocks and plants that can withstand brackish water. Although peaceful, Monos do grow to a large size and may make a meal of smaller fishes that they out-grow.

Feeding

Monos are omnivorous and enjoy all types of food. Green foods, live foods and chopped meat or frozen bloodworms are all relished.

Water Chemistry

M. argenteus should be kept in brackish water only, and with a pH around 7.2. A powerful biological filtration system should be present. Use aged water with 2 1\2 teaspoons of sea salt added per gallon.

Breeding

Not accomplished in home aquaria.
