The Scat is a large, circular fish with a compressed body. The fish varies from green to yellow in color, with several dark spots all over. The lateral line is high and arched. The Scat has poisonous spines that should be handled with respect.

When buying a Scat, it's best to buy two young juveniles. Ask at what salinity they have been living and duplicate it. For every inch of growth thereafter add a half to full teaspoon of sea salt until a measurement of 1.018 density is reached. Younger fish live in brackish water but as they mature they become completly saltwater fish.

Scats are peaceful and can become quite tame. Feed them the basic diet, adding daily doses of vegetable matter. Unsatisfactory conditions often result in the fish becoming infected with ich. The Scat appreciates rocks and plants for hiding places. This fish is very sensitive to nitrites.
