The Smallmouth Buffalo is a rare, coldwater fish. They are large-scaled and deep-bodied with a hunched back. The body is shaped like a carp and is silver in color. Its humped back gives it is common name of "buffalo."

Smallmouth Buffalo get very big. Adults can reach a length of three feet and 35 lbs. Juveniles may be kept in a chilled aquarium, but mature specimens may be too much to handle in captivity. The aquarium should be large and decorated with rocks and dense vegetation. Plenty of free-swimming space should be provided, and water qualities aren't critical as long as it's well-filtered and kept clean.

These fish are omnivorous and should be fed accordingly. Small invertebrates and algae tablets are relished. Spawning of this species occurs in late spring\early summer.
