The Northern Hog Sucker is an oddball fish from eastern and central North America. Their down-turned mouths allow them to graze on algae growing on rocks, as well as sift through the substrate like a catfish. Their bodies are dark and marbled with various shades of black and brown. The belly and all lower fins are light in color.

Northern Hog Suckers grow to be very large fish. However, they are generally peaceful and get along with other large cold water fish. These fish are intolerant of anything but the best water quality. The temperature should be low; between 42-59 degrees F.

Spawing of these fish occurs in early summer.
