The Three-Spined Stickelback is a small coldwater fish that is very widespread, being found nearly anywhere in the world. The body is long and slender like that of a trout, with three spines on the back, hense its name. The dorsal fin is set back on the body, which is silver, and the eyes are big.

These Stickelbacks are schooling fish that prefer being in groups of at least 5-7. A well decorated tank with plants and rocks is essential. The tank should be well lit and the substrate should be a fine sand.

Stickelbacks must be kept in cool water in order to spawn the following summer. The tank should contain a few females for each male in order for spawning to occur. Females take turns laying eggs with the male in a pre-built nest, until up to 50 eggs have been layed. The male cares for the brood. Sticklebacks are sensitive to Ich disease and cannot live long in chalky water.
