Jurassic Fish
Weighing in at 300 Lbs, the Alligator Gar is not for everyone
by Mike McEwan
The Alligator gar is the largest of the Garpikes, growing up to 10 feet long and weighing over 300 pounds. Obviously, this fish is not a recommended aquarium fish and is best suited to a public aquarium. As their common name suggests, these fish look much like ferocious alligators. The body and fins contain many different shades of brown and grey. The snout isn't as delicate as on other gars and the eyes are set right on the side of the head. A joint behind the skull allows these fish to make nodding head movements, much like an alligator does as it downs its prey. The fins are small, the caudal fin being rounded.
Most fish sold as Alligator gars in the pet trade are Shortnose, Spotted or Florida gar - all much smaller fish. It is difficult to tell these fish apart unless you have two side by side, then it is apparent that the true Alligator gar has a wider rostrum and often has a small "down turn" on the end of the upper jaw. While these fish can grow up to 10 feet long, it will take them a real long time to reach such a marvelous size. After reaching around half of their total length, they start to grow more solid and heavily built. These prehistoric fish have a long lifespan.
Tank Setup
Only suitable for public aquaria, these monsters need tanks of at least 1500 gallons with plenty of free swimming space.
Feeding
In the wild they can be found laying motionless near the surface, waiting for food. In captivity, they will accept fish meat and other meaty foods like beefheart. Adult Alligator gars can eat a whole beefheart at a time, but need times of fasting.
Water Chemistry
A neutral pH is recommended. A general temperature between 70-80 degrees F should be provided, along with a dGH of up to 15.
Breeding
In the spawning season, from March to May, adhesive eggs attach themselves to plants or the substrate. Upon hatching, the fry hang vertically, using a sucker located on the upper jaw, and remain suspended until the yolk sac is absorbed. The fry develop rapidly. Spawning in aquariums has not been reported.
