Underrated Arow
A popular fish in its native land, The Australian Arowana is unfortunately rarely seen overseas
by DUKE
The Australian Arowana is one of the lesser-known of the Arowanas. They are similar in shape to the Asian Arowana, but slimmer. This elongated fish has a red spot on each
body scale and red spots on its fins.
Tank Setup
A well-anchored canopy is required, as this species is a notorious jumper.
As it matures, it becomes tamer but remains wary and nervous, and is easily alarmed. Like all Arowanas, the Australian Arowana should not be kept in tanks less than 70 gallons if they are to live a long and healthy life. Provide plenty of open swimming space.
Feeding
Favorite foods include prawns, crickets, lizards, meaty foods and occasionally will accept flake foods when young. This fish may bite fingers if your hand is anywhere near the tank during feeding times
Water Chemistry
Australian Arowanas require a pH that's slightly alkaline in order to thrive. Temperature should be between 74-82 degrees F and dGH up to 10.
Breeding
The fish spawn in mid-fall. Like other Arowana species, the male incubates the eggs in his mouth.
