Monster Fish

The Blue-Freckled Cichlid is truly a monster in the aquarium

by Mike McEwan

If there is any one Cichlid that stives for nothing less than dominance in the aquarium, the Blue-Freckled Cichlid is that fish. Adults have a deep orange body and brass-colored belly covered with blue "freckles" which are particularly intense on the operculum. The dorsal and anal fins of the male grow very long, sometimes trailing behind the fish past the caudal fin. Females lack most of the great coloring of males and only grow to half the size.

A Central American Cichlid, is one tough customer that is definetly not for the beginning hobbyist. As a juvenile, this fish can sometimes live in peace with other fish, but as it matures and rapidly grows into a powerful beast, it becomes dominant over tankmates and usually won't settle until it's the last remaining fish in the tank. This fish is pure muscle, mouth and teeth.

Tank Setup

The Blue-Freckled Cichlid requires a large aquarium with open waters. Large decorations such as rocks and bogwood are appreciated as shelter. Use a powerful filtration system as this fish will produce a large amount of waste.

Feeding

These Cichlids are pure carnivores. Meaty foods such as chopped beef heart or liver are relished. Live foods are recommended, as well as meat-based prepared foods such as carnivorous pellets and food sticks. They can become expensive fish due to their gluttoness appetite.

Water Chemistry

Keep the Blue-Freckled Cichlid in water with a pH value between 6.7-7.4 and a temperature between 74-81 degrees F.

Breeding

Because these fish are very large and aggressive, breeding is difficult and seldomly accomplished.
