Non-sweetened Chocolate
Despite the sweet name, Chocolate Cichlids are big bruisers capable of mass destruction
by Mike McEwan
Chocolate cichlids, from the Amazon region of South America, are among the most quarrelsome of all cichlids. Amateurs are shocked when their shy inch-long baby grows into a ten-inch monster that doesn't even get along with its own kind. As its name suggests, the body is brown in color as well as oval in shape.
Tank Setup
Being large, aggressive Cichlids, these fish require roomy tanks with tough decorations; a brittle tank setup will soon be destroyed. Supply the fish with plenty of open swimming space, along with shelter through the use of rocks and bogwood.
Feeding
Feed large morsels of food, such as earthworms, chucks of beef heart, and small live fish. Chocolate Cichlids are carnivorous and should be fed accordingly.
Water Chemistry
Chocolate Cichlids are hardy fish that can withstand a variety of water conditions. The pH is best kept neutral. A temperature range between 74-80 degrees F will suffice.
Breeding
These fish spawn in the usual South American Cichlid fashion; the female lays eggs on flat rocks carefully cleaned by both parents. One partner may be killed during courtship.
