Small And Feisty

Good things come in small packages when it comes to this Apistogramma

by Mike McEwan

The Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid is a small fish that displays stunning fins and colors. The body is elongated in comparison to most other Cichlids, and the fins are long and flashy. The base color of this Apistogramma Dwarf Cichlid is a creamy white to dark gray, with a long horizontal stripe from the gill cover to the caudal penduncle.

Tank Setup

Dwarf Cichlids should be kept in groups, with a few females for every male if breeding is to happen. Provide many territories by using rocks as caves, as well as driftwood roots and plants. Flower pots may be used as territories as well. A fine substrate made of dark sand or fine gravel should be used to keep the fish feeling at home.

Feeding

Though small, these Cichlids are carnivorous and need a diet based on meaty foods. Blood worms, Earth worms, chopped beef heart, insect larvae and food pellets are all relished.

Water Chemistry

This dwarf Cichlid species is sensitive to poor water conditions and strong medicines. An efficient filtration system is required to keep the fish in good health. Use a neutral pH with a hardness of up to 10 dGH.

Breeding

Spawning takes place in caves. Females lay their eggs up inside the caves while the male patrols the area. Males sometimes breed with more than one female, and so fry are often mixed up and switched by the parents. Either way, females will protect the fry that she claims to be her own.
