Discus fish, from rivers and lakes of the Amazon, are a long-time popular aquarium fish, especially among experts. The body is perfectly round, with long based dorsal and anal fins. They have been bred into many different strains of colors, but the general base color is brown, with the top and bottom of the fish being a shiny blue. Several dark bands run along the Discus' body.

Tank Setup

Discus fish need very clean water to stay healthy. This cannot be stressed enough. The absolute best filtration system, coupled with frequent water changes will usually ensure your Discus' health. They are very peaceful and only show aggression during spawning season. Thick vegetation should be in the corners and along the back of the tank, with open swimming space near the center. Driftwood is a prefered tank decor for Discus, as it will also soften the water and keep the PH acidic. A large, deep tank is needed. Light levels should be subdued, possibly through the addition of floating plants.

Feeding

Although peaceful, Discus fish are carnivorous and need meaty foods in their diets. Beef heart is accepted, as are most live foods. Flakes and pellets are rarely accepted.

Water Chemistry

As already mentioned, it's best to keep your Discus in an acidic pH between 6.0-6.5. Water quality is extremely important to the fish's health. Keep the temperature high and the water soft.

Breeding

During spawning season, the female lays several hundred eggs on rocks and plants. The eggs are fairly large and hatch after about two days. Both fish are model parents and protect their fry, which feed on a special secretion produced on the parent's skin. The young develop into recognizable Discus fish after about three months. These fish are recommended for a single species tank and are noted for their grace and beauty.
