Small But Not Forgotten

Starting out with a 10 gallon tank? The Dwarf Gourami makes a great specimen

by Mike McEwan

The Dwarf Gourami is a small, peaceful and timid species of Anabantid. The body is shaped in the usual Gourami matter. The base color is a rusty-red, with vertical bands of iridescent blue running along it. The fins are speckled with this same iridescent blue color.

Tank Setup

Dwarf Gouramis will not thrive unless they're kept in water of excellent quality, so a powerful filtration system is recommended. Plants, both rooted and floating are appreciated, along with driftwood for hiding places. Regular water changes are required to keep this fish in good health.

Feeding

Gouramis are often put in aquariums to eat Hydra, which can be dangerous for young fish. Gouramis can also be helpful reducing an overpopulation of snails. They must be provided with the basic diet, however. Favorite foods include basic flake food, freeze-dried foods, and blanched lettuce.

Water Chemistry

These Labyrinthfish have no special requirements when it comes to water conditions except that the water should be kept clean and well-filtered. A neutral pH and common tropical water temperature between 72-82 degrees F will suffice. They are hardy fish that thrive under most conditions.

Breeding

Males are much more colorful than females. These fish pair quite easily, and build a bubble nest in the usual Gourami fashion. The male guards the nest and the eggs hatch after about a day. Removal of the female is needed after spawning, for she may eat the eggs. 2 days later, the male should be removed, or he may eat the fry, which leave the nest after 24 hours.
