This predatory Cichlid is a native of Lake Malawi of Africa. It isn't a pretty fish, and has been known to bite at the eyes of other fish, hence its common name of "Eye-Biter". It also eats its prey tail-first.

Keep the pH of the water very alkaline, around 8.0, and it should be hard as well. Provide a tank with lots of rocky hiding areas that the fish can use to stake out its territory. Tankmates should be able to fend for themselves.

This fish is a mouthbreeder and is known to spawn in captivity if the settings are proper. Fully-grown males are a shiny blue-green in color, while females have heads of gold.
