The Hi-fin Banded shark is a peaceful bottom-dweller cyprinid from China. The body is a pinky tan color, with large bands of black running vertically on the body. The dorsal fin is large. The adult specimen however, looks nothing like its juvenile form.

In nature, this fish will grow up to three feet long, but in the aquarium you'll be lucky if it reaches 1\3rd of that. The Hi-fin Banded shark is a slow-grower, growing only around an inch per year, which explains the small required tank size for such a large fish.

The Hi-fin Banded shark will accept a wide range of PH qualities, but is sensitive to nitrate. A powerful filtration system is needed to keep this fish healthy, and the water should be fast-flowing. This fish is always in continuous search of food, and will sift through the substrate, looking for food and acting as a fairly good scavenger. These fish prefer the company of each other. Although often sold as a tropical fish, this cyprinid does equally well in coldwater.
