Big Bruiser
Notopterus chitala is best suited to large display tanks or public aquaria
by Mike McEwan
Notopterus chitala, commonly known as the Clown Knifefish or Featherback, is a large predator from Southeast Asia. Their bodies are elongated in the shape of a blade, which explains the name of "Knifefish". They are a silver fish and, depending on where the individual fish originated, display up to 10 large black spots on their side, all ringed in white. The dorsal fin is small and set far back on the body while the anal fin is long-based and covers 2\3 of the fish's body.
Clown Knifefish are very popular as food fish in their native land throughout Asia.
A similar species, N. notopterus, is more suited to the home aquarium as it grows 1\3 the size of N. chitala.
Tank Setup
The Clown Knifefish must be kept in a very large aquarium. It is recommended to keep these fish alone as they are voracious predators capable of overpowering fishes of the same size and eating anything smaller. In their natural habitat they live in areas of calm, swampy waters. Large plants and sheltered areas should be available for the fish to take cover in. They are nocturnal, preferring low light levels, so floating plants are appreciated. These fish lack large scales or bony plates so be sure not to use sharp rocks in the aquarium that could cause injury.
Feeding
Being carnivores, Clown Knifefish must be fed chunks of meaty foods such as chopped beef heart, prawns, live fish or fish meat. They prefer to feed at night time.
Water Chemistry
N. chitala will adapt to most home aquarium conditions as far as water chemistry goes. They do, however, prefer a slightly acidic pH between 6.2-7.0. Water temperature should be kept quite high, around 84 degrees F.
Breeding
Spawning takes place in the spring time when the female lays thousands of eggs on the substrate or a cleaned surface. Only the male of the species plays a roll in the caring for the eggs and fry, and he becomes extremely aggressive towards other fishes. The eggs hatch in approximately two weeks. Spawning can be triggered by a raise in temperature, sometimes as high as 90 degrees F. Sexual identification methods are unknown.
