The Black Lancer is a rare catfish. Its name comes from the elongated dorsal fin of the adult fishes. Depending on its size, the fish may have a lateral white stripe down its body. The body shape and caudal fin of the Black Lancer changes as it grows. There are four pair of barbels.

It is vital to keep an adult Black Lancer in a deep aquarium, in order for it to fully extend its dorsal fin. This timid fish prefers to stay out of the open, except at feeding time. It appreciates live earthworms and pelleted food, but it is a good idea to offer a variety of food when first acclimatizing the fish. The Black Lancer seems to shy away from heavy water current areas, so while a good filtration system is required, heavy water flow is not.
