Aquaria Central ..................................Leporinus

Leporinus fasciatus
Other names:...........Black-banded Leporinus
Origin:......................Central South America, Amazon
Max size:..................12"
PH:............-..............6.0-7.0
Temperature:...........72-80 F.
Min tank size:..........65 gallons
Food:.........................vegetable flakes, flakes, pellets, small live foods

The Leporinus eats vegetation, so plant its tank sparsely with plants on which it will nibble. It will also graze in the lower strata, picking up choice morsels or live and dry foods. The vertical stripes along its sides increase in number by dividing in two as the fish grows.

This fish is an excellent jumper, hence the tank must be kept covered. Some individuals may become aggressive, nipping to shreds the fins of other species. Schools of these fish in large numbers can be very impressive. A way of visually sexing this fish is unknown. The fish can adapt to many water conditions. Attempts to breed the Leporinus in captivity have been unsuccessful.
