The Marbled Hatchetfish is most noted for its unmistakable shape. Its big, round belly gives it a triangular body shape. This fish has long, winglike pectoral fins, which it uses to propel itself through the air when they leap from the water. The body color is generally a light brown, with darker brown bands and marbled markings.

Like all Hatchetfishes, these fish spend most of their life floating on the surface, watching for food overhead. They are tremendous leapers, and will jump to catch small bugs off of overhanging trees and leaves. Flake foods are accepted in captivity, and a well-fitting lid is required.

The aquarium should be well-stocked with floating plants and driftwood with subdued light levels, typical of an acidic PH environment. These fish are very peaceful and like to be in schools of five or six, which, because of their small size, shouldn't be a problem even in the smallest of aquariums. Eggs may be seen through the almost transparent body of the female.
