Similar in shape to the other two species in the genus. Also has red spots on each scale, however has darker fins and body than S. leichardti, with fins darker than body colour. Complete covers necessary as this species jumps. Becomes tame - has a more placid temperament than S. leichardti and is less easily frightened. Occasional gulping at surface is normal.

Swims at all depths, however mostly mid water 24 to 28 degrees celcius, pH around 7, 125 gallon Found discontinuously from Cape York (tip of Queensland) west along the north of the Northern Territory. Also New Guinea

Easy to feed. Feed behaviour rapid and violent - holding food in fingers is not recommended. Carnivorous, prefers live crustaceans, insects and fishes - can be trained to take fresh and frozen foods. No spawning in tanks unknown.
