Pretty Tetras are among the more rare tetras seen in the hobby. They are a small, schooling fish from the Iquotos in Peru, and Brazil. Their bodies are shaped in the usual tetra-like fashion, with shiny bellies and black patches on the gill cover and caudal penduncle. Fins are transparent.

Decorations and hiding places should be provided through the use of plants and bogwood. Water conditions aren't too important as long as it is clean, soft and has a slight current. Treat them like most other small, schooling tetras. Two sub-species have been described - H. pulcher pulcher, and H. pulcher haraldi.

Pretty Tetras breed in the usual tetra fashion, laying eggs over and around plants. Fry should be fed small live brine shrimp. Females are more plump than males, especially at breeding time, and males have a more pointed swim bladder.
