There are two species of fish that are commonly known as the Red Terror; C. urophathalmus and C. festae. C. festae is considered the true Red Terror. The difference between the species can be told by the size and positioning of the caudal occelus. In festae the occelus is a round blotch circled by iridescent scales and is in the top third of the peduncle. In the other fish, the occelus is more like a stripe that extends more than halfway down the peduncle. The Red Terror can get up to 16" for a male, and can breed by the time they're 5".

Body color ranges from brown to green, with several dark verticle strips running down the body. Mature C. festae can be bright red with dark bars or a lemon yellow also with dark bars, especially at breeding time. Red Terrors are not fussy eaters, accepting a large variety of prepared fish foods and live foods. C. festae is more herbivorous than C. urophathalmus, so vegetable matter should be offered.

Large Terrors are very aggressive, so it is advised to use the popular seperation technique used for other cichlids when breeding them. A large spawn can be from 1000-2000 eggs.
