The Ruby Barb is an old aquarium favorite. A small fish, they have a ruby red head that shades to the black caudal fin. These cyprinids have large eyes and scales.

Ruby Barbs should be kept only in community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish. However, slow-moving fish are not recommended as these Barbs can be fin-nippers. Keep in schools of at least six of the same species or other barbs with similar color patterns. A well-planted tank is recommended with floating plants to subdue the light levels for these shy fish. Though undemanding for pH and temperatures, water quality is important and so a strong filtration system is required.

Males are larger than females and, during spawning, the males are also brighter in color. They spawn in the morning, over and between plants. The eggs hatch after 24 hours and the fry should be fed small, live foods.
