The Salvini is a brightly colored fish from lakes and rivers of southern Mexico. Typical pugnacious cichlids, they have a bright yellow body with two blotchy dark lines running from the eye to the caudal fin. The fins are long-based and have a blue sheen to them.

Water conditions should be the same as other similar cichlids such as Jack Dempsies, Convicts or Firemouths. A neutral PH is recommended. They will generally not hurt plants or decorations, which are recommended as territories for the fish. They may sometimes be kept with smaller fish that can fend for themselves, but bewarel; Salvinis are aggressive and will bite others.

Salvinis are omnivorous and should be fed accordingly. Live foods are relished, and they will accept a wide variety of prepared foods. Vegetable matter should be supplied.

Salvini cichlids readily spawn in the right environment and are model parents. Males have more pointed dorsal and anal fins, the upper edge of the male's dorsal being bright red. When a pair is formed, they breed in the usual cichlid fashion by laying up to 500 eggs on flat, cleaned rocks. The protect the fry from others, and may get too aggressive for other fish to handle during spawning season.
