The striped Snakehead is a very predatory fish that can quickly eliminate all other fish in the tank. The body is elongated and the dorsal and anal fins are long-based. The fish's color darkens with age, and also develops the verticle stripes all down its body as it matures.

Like all Snakeheads, these fish can survive for months at a time out of the water breathing atmospheric air, provided the body stays moist and isn't allowed to dry out. Water should be clean, hard and alkaline. The tank should be heavily planted with a sandy substrate. A good filtration system is needed, as these Snakeheads produce a heavy amount of waste. Make sure the lid is tight fitting, as many aquarists have woken up to a nearly dead fish laying on the other side of the room.

Striped Snakeheads are carnivorous and need a constant supply of meaty and live foods. Beef heart is accepted, as well as earth worms and feeder goldfish. During spawning, floating eggs are layed by the female and guarded by the male. The fry hatch in 1-3 days. The parents must be removed, as they will eat their own young.
