The Swordtail is a popular aquarium fish, especially among beginners. Their name comes from their extended caudal fin, where the bottom points out like a sword on the males. The body shape of the fish is similar to that of the Guppy. Several color strains have been formed by breeders over the years including Neon, Red, Lyretail, Red Simpson, Green, Albino, Gold tux, Black and Spotted Swordtails.

All Swordtails are peaceful and require the same care. A large tank is not required, but plenty of open swimming space should be provided. Plants are an ideal tank decor for the Swordtail, and good light levels are appreciated. The PH should be alkaline and the water should be hard.

Swordtails, like almost all fish, prefer live foods like worms and larvae. They will accept almost all store bought fish foods as well, but live foods should be provided on a weekly basis in order for the fish to thrive. They make a good addition to the community tank and are peaceful fish, though they may eat their own young. Cover the tank, as these fish are accomplished jumpers.

Only male Swordtails have the "sword", while females have a rounder body. These fish are livebearers, and the female gives birth to 60-80 fry. A special breeder box may be purchased to protect the fry from their parents once they are born. A lack of hormones may actually make an adult female revert to a male.
