The Texas cichlid lives in rivers and lakes of Texas and north-eastern Mexico. These fish are territorial and intolerant of other fish. Juvenilles are socialable, but adults should be kept in large species tanks.

The texas cichlid needs places among roots and rocks to hide. It is recommended that the tank be given specific territories, like plants and rocks in the middle, to keep these nasty fish from fighting. Floating plants are appreciated, along with a bottom of fine sand. This tough fish has been said to survive in temperatures as low as 50 degrees F.

This hardy fish prefers neutral PH, with soft to medium water hardness of about 5-12 dGH. They are open breeders and need well oxygenated water, in order to spawn. They will spawn on cleaned rocks, dropping around 500 eggs. The fry are suspended from stones and are protected by the parents. Texas cichlids are not always the best of parents, and sometimes they will eat their spawn. These fish are sensitive to old water and need frequent water changes.
