King Of The Barbs

Tinfoil Barbs are easily the largest of the Barbs kept in captivity

by Mike McEwan

Barbus schwanefeldi, commonly known as the Tinfoil Barb, is among the more popular of Barbs. Reaching a length of 13" or more, they are not for the average hobbyist yet are sold throughout every petshop in the US. Their bodies are stream-lined and plated with large, silver scales. With age the fish develops beautiful orange and red color to its caudal and anal fins. The deep-forked caudal fin correctly suggests that this species is an extraordinarily fast swimmer.

Tank Setup

As you may have guessed, a fish this big and active requires a large aquarium. As well, they must be kept in schools of five or more where they will best display their beauty. Aquascape the aquarium with large pieces of driftwood, rocks and plants scattered about. Floating plants are recommended, while substrate is of little importance.

Feeding

When fed correctly, Tinfoil Barbs grow rapidly, adding an inch in length every four weeks or less. They should be fed several times per day on earthworms, chopped beef heart, algae tablets, lettuce or most any common aquarium foods. They are far from picky when it comes to dinner time.

Water Chemistry

These Cyprinids are hardy and can adapt to many aquarium conditions. A neutral pH and temperature range between 72-78 degrees F is appreciated. They are sensitive to ammonia and foreign chemicals.

Breeding

Breeding has been accomplished in public aquariums but details are unknown.
