Western Mosquitofish, from Texas, are small fish that live in slightly colder than usual waters. These livebearers have elongated bodies which are dark with light bellies. These fish resemble the common guppy.

Western Mosquitofish are undemanding and hardy. Males are usually up to an inch smaller than females. A small, planted tank is required and these fish can stand a wide range of water values.

For a small fish, they are surprisingly carnivorous. Mosquito larvae are relished. So much in fact that they are used to control malaria. If larvae are not available, flakes or small pellets will suffice.

As many as 50 or 60 fry may be born after a gestation period of about four weeks. Parents will eat the young, so provide plenty of dense plant cover. Feed fry newly hatched brine shrimp and finely-ground flake food.
