Julidochromis ornatus is a small cichlid from Lake Tanganyika in Africa. The fish has an elongated body with three dark horizontal stripes along its body from nose to tail. The rest of the body is light in color, ranging from beige to yellow. Fins may display a blueish sheen. Females are somewhat smaller than males.

Water in the aquarium should be very alkaline and hard. Caves should be in abundance with the addition of rocks. Flowerpots may also be used as territories. A few Julies per tank is preffered, and proves for some entertaining battles over territories. Hardy plants capable of living in Tanganyikan conditions should be added.

Julie cichlids are omnivorous and need both meaty foods and vegetable matter in their diets. prepared foods such as pellets and flakes are readily accepted.

When it comes to spawning, these fish are fun to watch. The parents dig a pit in the sandy substrate where they will protect the nest. Both the male and the female tend to the fry, which may be in numbers of up to 150.
