Voracious Predator

With its power and territorial personality, the Six-Line Grouper is one tough customer

by Michael McEwan

The Six-Line Grouper is a large fish from the family Grammistidae that inhabits the waters of the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans. This fish has the same body shape of other Grouper species, but is easily recognized by its distinct color patterns. The base color of the fish is dark brown to black with a slight blue sheen. Several lines, often more than six, run horizontally from nose to caudal. The number of lines increases with age.

Tank Setup

Being the large and predatory fish that they are, Six-Line Groupers require a large aquarium of at least 70 gallons. Smaller tanks will not do these beautiful fish justice. Hiding places should be provided and light levels should be subdued. Only one specimen is recommended per tank.

Feeding

Six-Line Groupers are pure carnivores and must be fed accordingly. Meat, fish, shrimp and prepared foods such as pellets are all appreciated. Beef heart is a favorite. This monster can devour fishes up to half its body mass.

Water Chemistry

A salinity of 1.025 and temperature between 75-82 degrees F is recommended. If kept in proper conditions the fish lives a long and active life.

Breeding

Successful breeding of the species in captivity has not been reported.
