Predator In The Aquarium

The Alexandria Grouper has the ability to take down fish much larger than itself

by Michael McEwan

The Alexandria Grouper is one of few Groupers that doesn't outgrow even a large aquarium. The body is brown to rusty red, with lighter and darker shades of lines running horizontally.

Tank Setup

This Grouper appreciates a tank with plenty of hiding places for shelter. Subdued lighting also helps make the fish feel at home. Alexandria Groupers are solitary and should be kept one per tank. These fish are very powerful and can overtake fishes much larger than themselves, so care must be taken when selecting tankmates.

Feeding

Alexandria Groupers are predators and prefer live fish as food. They will accept meaty foods such as beef heart, as well as crustaceans. Periods of fasting are beneficial to the fish's health.

Water Chemistry

A salinity of 1.025 and temperature between 64-74 degrees F is recommended. If kept in proper conditions the fish lives a long and active life.

Breeding

Successful breeding of the species in captivity has not been reported.
