Stunning in Blue

The Blue Tang is a beautiful fish from the family Acanthuridae

by Michael McEwan

The Blue Tang is a beautiful fish from the Western Atlantic ocean. Coloration of this fish is unusual in the way that the adult fish differs greatly when compared to its juvenile counterpart. The name "Blue Tang" refers to the adult fish, as young specimens are bright yellow with only a trace of blue around the eye and bases of the fins. Adults contain yellow only in the caudal fin, while the body is a brilliant, opaque blue with a wavy horizontal purple pattern. Color intensity varies depending on the mood of the fish.

Tank Setup

Acanthurus coeruleus is a large fish needing a large, roomy tank with lots of free swimming space. Blue Tangs are generally peaceful, though they can be fin-nippers when young so tankmates should be chosen with care.

Feeding

Blue Tangs are herbivorous fish and should be fed accordingly. These fish relish all vegetable foods, especially algae.

Water Chemistry

A temperature of 75-79 F, a pH of 8.4 and a salinity level between 1.023 and 1.027 are appreciated and essential to the fish's health.

Breeding

Successful breeding of the species in captivity has not been reported.
