The Harlequin Sweetlips is a large fish that demands a large tank. They resemble a common clownfish, with their base color being a rusty orange. Several large, white blotches, edged in black, are scattered over the body. The dorsal fin is oddly shaped with several tall spines at the front.

Hiding places for this fish are a must. Decorate the tank with large coral pieces and rocks as shelter for the Sweetlips to hide in and around. These fish are crepuscular, often very quiet by day. They are peaceful fish that can be kept with other fishes quite successfully, but the tank must be very large or they will quickly outgrow it.

In the open waters of the Indo-Australian archipelago, the Harlequin Sweetlips mainly feeds on small crepuscular invertebrates. Breeding and sexing information has not been reported.
