The Threadfin Butterfly fish, like other Butterflyfish, are deep-bodied and laterally compressed fishes. They are found mainly in the Indo-Pacific oceans, but are also found in the Red Sea. Although other Butterflyfishes have a wide range of color patterns, not many have a filamentous extension to the dorsal fin, which in this species also carries an 'eye spot'. The function of this eye spot is to distract the attention of a predator from the real eye; for the same reason, the eyes of many species are hidden by a dark stripe.

The Threadfin Butterfly is a generally peaceful fish, and, like all Butterflyfishes, appreciate a place to retreat to at night. They are shy fish and may choose to starve rather than compete for food against more boisterous fishes in the tank. These fish have color markings that differ from their adult form. This species of Butterflyfish is territorial and make battle with its own species.
