Hello gang,
Im wondering what type of filtration will be best for a 29 gallon, as in canister, power, uv... soo many choices. Im looking for a filter that will give the best water clarity and the least maintenance.

I have a 29 and use a Aqua tech back filter made for up to 55 gallon tanks. my tank is crystal clear and my fish are very healthy looking.

For best water clarity and less maintenance, I recommend a Rena XP2. It will overfilter the water (which is best) and you only need to rinse the sponges in old tank water maybe once a month. They are easy to setup and maintain. :) I'm getting ready to switch from an Aquaclear50 HOB to a Rena XP2 on my 29g.

I have two aquaclear70s on my tank. My water looks great and they are really easy to maintain. They are HOB.

Its really nice to have two filters instead of one. This moves water more evenly and if you clean one at a time, you hardly deplete your biological filtration. It also nice insurance in case of failure. If you buy them on line, they are really quite cheap.

Another vote for Aqua Clears here....I've had great success with them and they keep the water crystal clear.

Whatever you choose, try to use two filters. And also keep in mind that as far as quality and effectiveness, there really is hardly any difference between any of the major brands of filter. So for canisters you will do equally well with Fluval, Rena and Eheim. With hang on backs you do well with Aquaclear, Whisper and Penguin.

I make a big deal out of this constantly so make fun of me as you see fit. But I stand by this assertion - pay no mind to anyone who tells you to choose one filter over another. You have to decide for yourself.

Canisters will probably gibe you less maintenance issues overall. Any of the HOBs will filter more than adequately.

In a 29 gal, you can easily overfilter and create flow conditions that may be undesirable depending on what fish you keep.

I have a Cascade 30-70 gallon HOB on my 36-g tank. I like the quad filtration and it cycled my tank VERY quickly once I added a small piece of my old tank's filter substrate in the reservoir.

My only complaint with it is that the intake tube doesn't extend as long as I'd like for it to... but the water flow and the filtration have been great from what I've seen and I'm very pleased with it.
