From what I've been reading, most people for their DIY stand use 3/4".
If you go to GARF.com> Diy Pages> Stand Building he uses 3/4" for a 135gal reef tank.

Hope that helps!:)

I would use 3/4" but in actual practice, the underlying support of it is more critical.

Since acrylic tanks distribute weight over the entire bottom I would use 3/4" to be sure. As stated the actual under structure is more important but it is better to err on the strong side. If you are not sure that the top is perfectly flat and in plane I would also put 1/2" white stryrofoam under the tank to make up for any inconsistencies. I find blue styrofoam is too dense and does not have as much give so you might as well not even have it there.

I do plan on a solid understructure, (I'm a framer) I think I'll go 5/8 to save a little money, with headers spanning front to back on the ends and at 20&40". . it's cold and work is slow here in michigan!
