View Full Version : Betta -- bubble of the wrong kind. X:

Right. I've had fish before, and have right now in my 12gallon, but never a betta. ^^;;

So I saw this guy at petsmart the other day and almost bought him. Came home, debated with myself, then went back.

On the second trip, I noticed a bubble under his lower lip on the left side. At the time, it looked like something melafix is supposed to clear up, and I've got plenty of that. So I got him anyway.

I don't have a quarantine tank (hoping to put him in the 12gallon with my lone upside-down catfish and make sure they get along) so I've been keeping the water in the cup clean, and have been medicating him in it and making sure he eats, and stuff.

( Been using room-temp water from my 12gallon as replacement, since it tests out wonderfully. )

However, now I've noticed that the bubble inflates when he does stuff like blow bubbles at the surface, then deflates a while later. O_o So now I'm not sure what it is.

I managed to take a few crappy pictures --

And right now he's doing something strange, too. Poking at the water like he might try to jump out, then resting on the bottom. Poking at the top, resting at the bottom. The water is straight out of the 12gallon, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. O_o;;

So questions: any idea what that bubble is? And, any ideas on the weird behavior? Or is that normal for a betta stuck in a cup. x: *is going to move him to something bigger even if she keeps him out of the 12gallon*

...Don't think it's going to be an issue anymore. -_-

Any ideas on what that bubble was would still be appreciated, though. :/

the poking at the surface is not all that weird... bettas are labyrinth fish which means they have a special organ in their throat that allows them to breathe air directly from the surface...all bettas will frequently breathe at the surface. as a matter of fact they usually NEED to breathe air at the surface, so make sure that your betta always has access to the surface.

as far as the bubble, if you say it inflates and deflates as the betta blows bubbles, it may be some sort of birth defect. is the skin bubble the same color as the rest of the fish?

edit: why not an issue.....did he die? also, usually when I see a sick fish in a store, that's the one I DON'T buy.

It was more than casual poking at the surface x: which is why my first thought was water quality, but it's fine.

And it sort of looks/ed like it could have been skin. When it was inflated, it was clearish, and when it wasn't you couldn't tell because his head was very very black.

...And yeah, he did. Stopped moving and stopped breathing even a bit several minutes ago, I'mma head out and bury him in a few. -_- Had him less than 24 hours, so he must have been actually sick. X:

Yeah. D: He was blowing bubbles on the surface last night/this morning, though, so at least he got some good times. x:

sorry about the fish....does your pet store have a return policy for dead fish? you may want to go that route instead of burial....up to you though

It'd cost more in gas and time to go out there than to just eat the cost of the fish. He wasn't a crowntail or anything, just a plain male betta.

He was pretty though.... such a shame. Still, at least he had one good day with you, right? That's gotta be worth something.

Don't let this damper your spirits, though. I hope you'll invest in a nice healthy betta again someday. *smiles softly*

I've been around with other kinds of fish long enough to know how that goes XD it was just extra depressing because it was my first betta ( so pretty! D: ) and... uh... I'd rather hoped he'd last longer than a day.

X: Next time I'm definitely not taking the sickly one, much as I feel sorry for them.
