I am confused. This is a rather sudden appearance, with no known injury. He seems to be eating normally. No obvious ulcerations on the skin surface. What could this be? If I can figure out how to do it, I will post a picture. TIA! :help:

Does this work? That white area on the left side of the gourami is very swollen. This was the best shot I could get. He was very camera shy. Thanks! Mahma

I would take him to a fish vet, if I knew of such a thing....

Have you recently added any fish/plants?

I don't think a salt bath would help (but can't hurt) b/c I think this may be parasitic... :(

I haven't added a thing. We had a round of ick through here, so we're actually coming back from the salt/heat treatment (for several wks). He made it through and has appeared fine until the last couple of days. there are no signs of ick anywhere, as we did the full 3 wks., etc.

I will try to get a better picture. Perhaps that's confusing the issue. Thanks!

I had a dwarf gourami with the same problem. He ate normally and acted normal, but looked like a swollen pig. He ended up living for about a month, until he got so fat, it looked like the scales were going to pop off. Long story short, he died.

Great story, huh? Hopefully yours turns out better.

No...one of these days I will figure them out... I think they are Red-eyed tetras.

The weird story is that he's only swollen on the left side. The right side appears normal. ??????

I fully expect this one to die in the absence of intervention. But I have no idea.... FWIW, this one is pooping, so it doesn't appear to be constipation.

Thanks for the response.

Hmm. One of my fish had this problem (though not as intense as yours) and I do believe it was internal parasites, but I'm not sure whats wrong with your fish. Dwarf gouramis tend to have more health problems than most other kinds of gourami species.

I'm sorry about your fish, I hope he gets better.

it looks like an internal bacterial or parasitic infection to me.

dropsy is also a factor, but it is a symptom, not a disease in itself. the fish's liver fails, and it has trouble correcting the liquid content of the water.

Do you know what I can do...if anything? TIA!

google search gorami disease.
also, could it be a tumor?
I have little to no experience with fish illnesses.
I have read that d>goramis are prone to internal parasites.

I have the same problem with a dwarf gourami. Swollen on one side and a little lethagic. I have moved him to a QT tank and I am treating with broad spectrum antibiotics. He doesn't seem to be improving and has not been eating.

Where did this constipation idea come from?

I had a neon blue dwarf gourami show same thing last year. He swelled up alot on one side, then started on the other. Never any pineconig, therefore not dropsy. No signs of internal parasites. He was eating, swimming, pooping, interacting normally with other two for over a month. Tried all kinds of meds. I posted on another site, and found a fellow who had been experiencing same thing so started to conduct experiments, as he wanted to breed a hardier dwart. He believed it to be an internal bacteria or something, like hexamita. I'm sorry, but your little guy will die. I will never keep them again.
