any thoughts?
I was thinking potscrubbers - easy to put in and take out, seem to have plenty of surface, light, inert....

i have used thouse bio balls, my lfs sells them by the piece, i float them in the tank its self and leave them in there put lots in a cycled tank and when you start a new tank take some out and put in the new tank, use 2 per 10g of the blue ones i think they are 1 or 1 1/2 inches, this helps but not to attractive, they make tiny ines and some have little stars you can put in the space of you hob but i haven't seen any in my stores, don't like ordering from mag, or internet the kill you on the shipping..

The penguin 200 has a space inside the filter for an extra media basket. The lfs should sell these or you can contact Marineland about this and they should have them. They are not very expensive and then you can slide it in the filter itself with whatever media you decide to use. I use mine with some fine batting material and it works great for me.

I have been wondering the exact same thing. I have one Penguin Size C Filter Cartridge in the filter. Can I use a bag or pad of other material in the filter as well (behind the single cartridge)? If so, any specific recommendations? I am having water clarity issues.

Thanks a ton folks

I have no water clarity issues yet.
what is filter floss? do LFS tend to carry it? is it practically similar to potscrubbers or is it like a "mess o' string".
would be nice if I could take it out and give it a rinse now & then.
maybe a media basket filled with floss!

I buy sheets of rolled filter pads and cut to fit my filters. I don't buy already made filter replacements. Sometimes I'll make them double thick. If you need carbon, you can buy a mesh bag and a container of carbon.

In one of my filters I have a bio-wheel in front of my filter pad. When I needed to change out the filter pad, I peeled the manufacturers pad off of the plastic holder and replaced it with one I cut from the roll. I needed the plastic divider so the pad wouldn't get in the way of the wheel.
