ok so its now been 11 days since i noticed my female melanochromis exasperatus has been holding. I was just wondering about how long she will hold before she spits out the fry and also i have heard of some fish keepers having to help out new moms by making them release the fry... so if she doesnt release them will i have to shake her lol.. and another question about how long will a female hold anyway ....can u tell im very new to spawning fish i have always kept all male tanks in the past. any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

It depends.

Typically 18-21 days but can be as few as 14 to as many as 35 days (it kind of depends on how experienced the female is and how comfortable she is with the current surroundings, etc).

Some people strip the fry (and sometimes eggs) from the mother, while others let them release fry in the main tank or in a 'maturnity' tank containing just the mouthbrooding female.

What type of tank is the female currently in (main tank or maturnity tank?)

shes currently in the main tank but i can probably set up a small 10 gallon for her if need be. i was actually debating on that anyway because i wanted to try and raise the fry up away from the main tank for fear that one of the other inhabitants may deem them as easy prey.
