Hey everyone-
I have a 2.5 g tank with 1 honey dwarf gourami and 2 amano shrimp. Recently, the shrimp molted and cracked half of its tail upwards. It seems to be stuck in that position. After another molting, will this change? Also, i recently lost a betta. I already bought 2 otos but they died that day. This could be because ive only had this tank for about 2 months or less. I was considering waiting, testing my water, and getting to more. But, are there any additional fish or other options than the otos that i should consider. please respond!

first, it sounds to me like his exoskeleton hardened while he was in a wierd position, and it may go away with the next molt if he goes back into the origional position.

second, with your tank- your tank is fully stocked with the honey gourami, and your tank may even be a little small for the gourami. if your tank has only been running for less than 2 months, chances are it is still going through the cycle. otos can be very sensitive to water quality, and the high ammoina and nitrite during the cycle probably is what did them in.

what are your readings for ammoina, nitrite, and nitrate?

what type of test kit are you using?

how often do you do water changes?

Stupidly, i havent tested the water but i obviously i intend to before making any changes. If otos are so sensative, maybe they r not the best idea. Any other suggestions of fish-smallish maybe so they dont add alot to the bioload. And is the tail of a shrimp something that completely falls off during molting or is it just the exoskeleton over it?

Just the exo on the shrimp I think. Sounds like you need a bigger tank. If you want to stay small you can usually find a 10g for about 8 or 9 bucks. Still small but you could have your Gourami and shrimp OK in it. Gouramis tend to be a little pokey on other fish, especially smaller ones so I'd think twice before adding anything else.

Cheers

i do significant water changes twice a week. does that mean that the shrimp tail wont recover? The gourami is incredibly peaceful and space has not been an issue

This same exact thing happened to one of my shrimp about 3 weeks ago. It seems to have mostly 'fixed' itself (and he's molted since then again) but it's still bent more than usual- I can tell him apart from the rest just because of it.

Any other fish ideas? Im open to any ideas and of course i will test the water frequently before making any decisions so I'll have time to research all fishes suggested!!
