Finally, a week and a half ago I got 21lbs of live rock from my LFS. It was very bland looking with all kinds of things (dead) hanging on it. For the last ten days, I have been looking for any signs of life. My parameters have gone through pretty quickly. (After I received advice to turn off my skimmer) Ammonia and Nitrite are very very close to zero and Nitrate is about 5ppm.
Anyway, I was at a couple LFS tonight just wanting to buy a good piece of rock for some type of life. Couldn't find anything good though. When I got home, I turned on the lights in the aquarium (I generally have left the lights off except for ambient room lighting - which has led to no algea problem at all) . . . and everywhere there were little white bugs darting all over the rock. I was so happy that finally something is in there.
Just thought I would keep everyone updated.
20g
21lbs of live rock (cheap base rock)
20lbs of live sand (the kind from the package . . . not real live sand)
It cycled my tank pretty quickly - about 12 days.
