Does anyone have any experience with a Maxi-Jet Powerhead?

Are these good products? Or should I look for another powerhead? Whats your experience? Whats a good company?

Thanks!!!!

I really like the MJ PHs. The only thing I'd really recommend doing is either spending the extra money (more than the PH itself) on the Algae-Free magnetic mounts or DIY some yourself. The difference is night and day when it comes to magnetic mounts vs. suction cups. Not battling suction cups to stick and no longer worrying about one falling off the glass and causing a sand storm or landing on a coral has been quite a relief.

So what you're saying is the suction cups get all covered in algae and the powerhead then falls down into the tank? That's not good.... I've haven't seen any metal clips or anything.... hmmmm

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Yeah, section cups in marine tanks are alwats dodgy because of the salinity of the water, it creeps behind the suction cup, goes slightly slimy and falls off...i have used a large tank magent before and used zip ties to mount the powerhead on to the magnet...works a treat and easy to re-position...

long term a magnet next to the pump wont be so good. the pump works by a magnet so the oposing force will ware it down sooner. just replace the suction cups and fasten the powerhead cord in a way so that it cant fall or angel to the sand bed.

I've got 4 maxi-jets. Whenever I unplug mine to feed/water change. I have had them refuse to work when I plug them back in. Mine eventually start again, but only after I've re-plugged them in about 20X each. I won't buy another one.

I bought 2 maxi's 2 azoo's and 2 via aqua's and the maxi jets are so much better than the other two brands. Also they are small/don't take up much space and like someone said earlier they are quiet.

Also about the suction cup thing ... the maxijets are light and they don't pull on the suction cups as much as my other heads do. Then again I havn't expierenced the salt creeping yet (i've only had them for 2 weeks.) and I'm not looking foward to it i guess.

I have 3 maxi-jets and they all work great. The design is simple and effective. to the poster who's maxi-jets don't start I would take it apart and clean it. You might have something stuck in there. You twist the bottom until the notches line up and it just pulls apart.

I agree with everything everyone has said about Maxi-Jet. I have 3 of them (1 of which I've had 2.5 yrs). The only difference being - my suction cups haven't let me down yet!!! (probably will tonight now I've said that!)

Yup i totally agree with this. Also instead of replacing the suction cups you can simply clean them in HOT fresh water. I have some super duty tape that holds the cords of my powerheads to the back of the tank to help keep the powerheads from falling. This seems to work great. Also it is usually a good idea to maintain your powerheads by cleaning them atleast bi-monthly.

how do you " mod" a power head may I ask?

adding different attachments and so on.

Usually you can add a piece of PVC pipe to the outlet of the powerhead. Drill holes all around the pipe and then cap the PVC. This will cause the water from the PVC pipe to be dispersed.

When people talk about modding a powerhead they are usually referring to alterations that will increase the output or power of the pump moreso than just directional attachments. Maxijet is a very common mod that involves changing the prop. Check out www.mjmods.com (http://www.mjmods.com) if you're looking for kits.
