Hey guys,
I have 3 swordfish mollies (1 male, 2 females). I bought them about 2 months ago. They seem to have remarkable colors on them. Pink/red when the aquarium lights are on, and, in addition, when the aquarium lights are off and they reflect sunlight, they have a green hue to them.

My problem is that the belly of the two females appear to sometimes grow (but certainly does not look like its going to exlode) and then it gets slightly slimmer again. I can never tell if they are (1) getting pregnant, and (2) if so, if they are delivering and all the babies are being eaten up.

The male is always chasing them trying to impregnate them, but I never actually seen him successfully put his thingy in them.

Also, as you see in the pics below, one of the female has pink/red thing in her belly, whereas the other's is black. They've both been this color since I got them 2 months ago.

Am confused!!

They look very beautiful.

The one in the second picture can get much bigger, she doesn't look very pregnant at all. However the one in the third picture looks as though she will give birth in the next week or so, maybe less, depending on conditions. Keep in mind that there will be a definite “square” shape to their bulge, near their anal fin.

Here is a picture of my pregnant molly, she gave birth about a few days after this picture was taken, she didn’t get much bigger than this, visibly.

If you've had them for two months and had no fry, it's highly likely that they are getting eaten, because as far as I know, mollies can give birth about once a month or so. You can try isolating the really pregnant female in a separate filtered tank (make sure the conditions are good, otherwise she won't give birth and get stressed) or simply give the fry even more places to hide in the tank.
