What filtration method for 125G?

Hi

I would like to get a 125G for cichlids, but I have little experience. What kind of filtration method should I be looking to?

I had thought to get a pump and build my own sump - I have seen some of the diy sites with pot scrubbers and it looked cheap. However the lfs suggested that for a freshwater tank I am better off with a canister and suggested the EHEIM professional II.

Not sure what to do. Advice much appreciated.
 
well first of all the most likely told you this because they want you to spend big bucks on that filter at their store. sumps are great and under rated in FW. a wet dry sump is the only good way to get higher turn overrate. if you go with a canister buy on line and save your self a lot of money. Eheims are good but i think they cost to much. i have used fluval which i had bad luck with rena xp which i really like hot magnum/ 350 magnum i also really like them also.
 
eheims are great, but ALWAYS buy them online, in most cases youll save between 50- 100 dollars!
 
if you're willing to build yourself a sump and a wet/dry, go for it. If you're not really into DIY, then I'd recommend an EHEIM 2217 and an EMPEROR 400 for your tank.
 
for cichlids / oscars (i raise them) i use the eheim 2028 pro II and a 29 gal sump that i built i have the cleanest water u can imagine!
